Marcia Kaye is an award-winning writer and editor with more than 20 years’ experience in national magazines and corporate and government publications.

Marcia specializes in health issues, family dynamics and major profiles, but she covers a wide range of topics that include politics, education, travel, personal finance and the arts. She has had exclusive interviews with three Canadian prime ministers, covered Queen Elizabeth’s Royal Tour and spent a week reporting on the Blue Jays and their families during spring training in Dunedin, Fla.

She has accompanied police on an armed takedown, interviewed a convicted rapist in prison and sat in on “John school.” In a series of investigative articles on food safety, she was the first to raise the alarm about the very real probability of mad cow disease in Canada – almost a year before it was discovered here.

Marcia is a winner of the sanofi pasteur Medal for Excellence in Health Research Journalism from Canadians for Health Research for her article “The Truth About Estrogen,” published in More magazine. She’s a three-time winner of the Award for Excellence in Health-Care Reporting from the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario, for her articles “For Safekeeping,” on cord blood banking, published in Today’s Parent; “The Truth About Estrogen,” published in More magazine; and “The Hot Shot,” about the HPV vaccine, published in More magazine. And she received an honourable mention for a journalism award for Excellence in Women’s Health Reporting from the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada for her feature article “Storm Warning,” on the connection between hormonal fluctuations and mental illness, published in Chatelaine.

Marcia has authored or co-authored five books.

She is the sole author of the best-selling children’s biography Karen Kain (Fitzhenry & Whiteside).

She is a contributing author to the internationally best-selling trilogy Growing with your Child, Raising Great Kids and Understanding Your Teen (Random House), all of which have been translated into several languages.

She is the sole author of Craigleith Ski Club: The First Fifty Years, a commemorative coffee-table book.

Marcia’s articles have been reprinted in dozens of secondary school textbooks and online educational publications.

 

Corporate and government work

Marcia wrote much of the web copy for the “Healthy Living” section of the web site of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (www.heartandstroke.ca). She has written three booklets for Health Canada, including For the Love of Kids, a 48-page parenting guide that won the Award of Merit from the Information Services Institute of Canada and has been one of Health Canada’s most requested publications. She edited a major report on SARS that was presented to the United States Senate.

Marcia’s byline appears frequently in the Imperial Oil Review. Other corporate clients include Kellogg’s, Kraft Canada, State Farm Insurance (U.S.), Mini-Minders Inc. and The Care Guide.

 

Marcia completed the graduate program in journalism at Ryerson University and also has a bachelor of arts from the University of Toronto. She is a longstanding member of PWAC, the Professional Writers Association of Canada. Her writing has taken her across the country, and her curiosity has taken her around the world. She has travelled from Yellowknife to St. John’s, Ecuador to Pakistan, Luxembourg to the Philippines. Marcia makes her home just north of Toronto with her husband and two daughters.
